Win or Lose?

Last week, my two sons came home from a very crucial basketball match --- they had lost by such a close margin, it was almost unbelievable!

Of course they were sorely disappointed, but their momentary depression lifted off as they reflected on their team, their game, their strategy, their strengths, their weaknesses.....and now, their determination to be better for the next season.

That's the way to go, boys! I'm proud of you!

Well, I'm no Sportswoman. I'm a Sportswatcher.
While my sons play and coach basketball, I watch basketball on TV!
In fact, I was watching a replay last week of Michael Jordan's heyday --- he'd won the MVP (Most Valuable Player) Award, even though he was the most important player on the team as well.

Of course I love to be a winner.Who doesn't?
But I think, win or lose, there's something more to life than getting the glory and winning the trophy (that will probably be found in the trash bin 40 years from now!!! Sorry to say it, but it's true!)

I fully acknowledge the need to go through the grieving process ---- denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and finally acceptance of the loss.
Then there is a need
to look at what was achieved during the training and preparation for the games ---- the relationships, the team spirit, the oneness, the encouragement, the altruistic (unselfish concern for others) values that impact the players. Above all, there is a need to learn from the experience of not getting what you expect always ---- this is real life!

During the game, play hard. Do your utmost best. Put the fire in your soul with the baskets (goals) in mind.
After the game, win or lose, celebrate. Put the smile on your face and in your stride because this is what precious moments and lifelong memory is made of!
