Caring for the Caregiver

Today, I went to visit a friend.
He had been in hospital for 3 years because of a serious head injury. So although it was his 69th birthday, he was not able to eat his birthday cake, give his birthday speech or dress his birthday best.

Did it matter?

He has a caregiver who stays by his side all day.
She makes conversation --- not expecting any response.
She cries alone over their unpaid bills and mounting debts.
Even friends and relatives visiting the sick have diminished over time.

Who cares for the caregiver?
Who hears about her fears and frustrations?
Who understands her needs?

While I looked at my friend, lying helpless and still --- there's hardly a hope that he will walk one day.
Then I looked at his caregiver, lonely and scared --- and I hope I will be faithful to walk with her through this journey and care for her in my own way!
