Friday, October 27, 2006 Halloween....hallow eve?
31 Oct is Halloween Day.
I remember some years ago when my son's class teacher thought it was a fun thing during school time for the kids to tell ghost stories on Halloween. It was a dare for many to show their bravery and courage, even if they were shivering under their skin! I had goose-bumps just imagining what a ghastly session it would be --- and I was certainly glad I was not a student then! However, what I've gathered since then is that ..... Halloween is supposed to be the eve of All Saints Day. As far as I know, "saints" and "hallow" are associated with things that are blessed, honored, sacred, revered, holy. Yet apart from the the carved pumpkin and the door-to-door knocking of Trick or Treat, how has Halloween evolved into a celebration of evil and ghoulish things --- ghosts, witches and vampires? What's frightening is that evil now looks good, witches are beautiful, magic potions are interesting and the power and influence of the devil have become entertaining! Now, isn't that scary???
