Outsourcing Motherhood

My friend has finally decided to take her 2-year-old son back with her to China (where her husband has a job posting). For the past two years, she had left her son with the grandparents in Singapore while she had been flying to and fro, dividing her time between husband and son.

Yes, it is a tough decision to make.

It is difficult to choose between emotion and logic --- between feelings of inadequacy as a first-time mum and a supportive family, between social pressure to stay together and climatic inconveniences, between the unknown and the surety.

It took my friend 2 years to recognise that...
grandparents or domestic helpers can babysit, but mothers need to bond;
they can teach, but mothers need to discipline (ie enforce the training);
they can love and care, but only mothers are able to sacrifice selflessly and go beyond duty!

Children did not choose to be born.
But mothers.....you make the choice --- make MOTHERHOOD your high calling! And do it well!!!

hi! i came across your blog by happenstance. i'm a 50+ dad with a reasonably happy family but i know of so many families that are dysfunctional and lately, there has been some letters/articles in the Today's paper about whether or not to be a full-time mum. i like a lot of what you are saying. commonsense kind of thing. i was wondering if we could start a blog for parenting - to help parents parent better, to help teenagers deal with love, and stuff like that.

my blog is ashpanda.blogspot.com. please visit and if you think it is a good idea, leave a comment. i won't disturb you again otherwise. happy blogging.

Hi Magnficent Mom,

I happened upon your blog and thought it was great. I've just started a parenting blog too -- www.pilgrimparent.wordpress.com -- and have posted a link and review of your blog.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I'm a mother of 3 young kids and am always looking for insights on how to bring them up right.
