Thursday, November 02, 2006 Making Memories
Someone just asked me:
"What do you remember of your childhood?" I know, I know.....it goes really way back in time.....but before I become senile or demented, I thought I'll write about what remains in my mind --- the memorable moments that I remember (even if I've forgotten how to do algebra, how to spell 'hippopotamus', how to sing my school song!). I remember how my father would come home without warning, pack us all in his taxi (it didn't matter if we were in pyjamas) and take us for a drive. I remember on every pay day, my mother would buy the "beef rendang" from Rendezvous (the Indonesian restaurant) for dinner. It was such a treat. At other times, she would make candy or cake and charge us for each piece we ate! It was to teach us to treasure what we have. I remember I used to just lie on the bare grass with my siblings at night in the park, tell each other stories as we counted the number of stars in the sky. Memories....... I also want my kids to have wonderful memories of their childhood. I certainly hope they will remember me for more than just my good cooking! I hope they remember me for making their childhood experiences F U N......CREATIVE......and where possible, FREE !!!
